McCarthy vs. Sedaris

Last night I finished reading Cormack McCarthy's The Road. By the time I was done, I was sobbing so uncontrollably that Kyle came running into the bedroom terrified that something really bad had happened.

The book is a post-apocalyptic story about a father and his son, walking the empty roads of America, trying to get to a safe place. The story is so incredibly sad but profoundly hopeful... A great reading experience, really.

I was so sad, though, that I immediately had to start reading an author that provides a diametrical kind of reading experience. I started David Sedaris's When You Are Engulfed in Flames: seemingly light-hearted but strange and sort of... well... disturbing.

Read both. If you are not afraid to weep, that is.

Hi Petya,
I really enjoyed The Road. He really painted a (gray) picture. I found myself trudging along with the pair.

However, I didn't really like the ending much. I can see how it fit optimistically with the power of hope, spirit, and faith. Still, jarring to me.

I'll have to give Sedaris a whirl.

Right now I'm reading Under the Yoke. Got it for Christmas. 1/3 through. I already hate the Turks :P

Just waiting to watch "The Road", personally...big Viggo fan, and he's in it, so...

I should pick it up and read it as well. Problem is the time factor...I'm spending 3 hours a day slushing for the spec-fic zine these days and finding time to read fiction for my own pleasure is pretty rare.
